Potsdam was named after the city in Germany.


Clarkson University, named for entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas S. Clarkson, is the community’s largest nonprofit. Clarkson developed power plants and the area’s first sewage system, and  founded the Potsdam Public Library. After he was killed in one of his sandstone quarries in 1894, his sisters started a school in his name.
